Star Stitch Keychain

Star Stitch Keychain is here!

This is such a fun, quick pattern that makes a great spring or summer project, and it uses less than 30 yards of yarn! It's super cute and functional too! That's a win on all fronts, if I do say so myself!

This pattern uses the Star stitch, which looks complicated, but actually works up really easy. I break it down with some photos for you, but if you need a more detailed video tutorial check this one out by Hopeful Honey.

Star Stitch Anatomy

The center of the star stitch is called an eye. Each post coming out of the eye is called the leg.

For each star stitch you will pull up 5 loops on your hook (totaling 6 loops with your starting loop) and then yarn over and pull through all the loops on your hook. To close the star stitch and create the eye, you will then chain one. Each star stitch counts as two stitches.

For this pattern I also chose to work into the back bump of the starting chain in order to get a nice clean edge on the bottom of the keychain. To work into the back bump rotate your starting chain and locate the third loop.

Materials:

Approximately 30 yards of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton or similar medium weight yarn. 

5.5 mm crochet hook

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends (I also use a smaller hook size for this if I don't have a needle handy)

Keyring

Notes on Gauge:

The finished keychain is right around 15 inches long before folding and connecting to the keyring. However, gauge is not crucial in this pattern. Thickness and width of your keychain will vary slightly from your choice of yarn. This is a great stash buster pattern, so mix up your worsted/medium weight yarn choices and have fun with all the different textures and widths! 

You can also adjust the length of your keychain to be longer or shorter. Just make sure that your starting chain is a multiple of 2 plus 1. 

Abbreviations: 

This pattern is written in American crochet terms. 

CH - Chain

SC - Single Crochet

HDC - Half Double Crochet

Pattern:

Holding two strands together. CH 41

ROW 1: working into the back bump of the chain, pull up a loop in the first chain from the hook and in the next 4 back bumps (total of 6 sets of loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all six loops. CH 1.

 * Insert hook and pull up a loop in the eye, last leg, last chain worked into and the next 2 chains (total of six sets of loops on hook) pull through all loops on hook. CH 1*

Repeat from * to * across the row

HDC into the last CH worked into. CH 1. Turn. (19 star, 1 HDC)

ROW 2: SC 1 into HDC, SC 1 into the eye of the last star stitch in the previous row, SC 2 into each following eye across row, SC 1 into beginning CH at the top corner of first star stitch. Fasten off, leaving long tail to attach to keyring. (39 SC)

Weave in beginning yarn tail.

Attaching Keyring:

Fold the keyring on top of itself with the right sides facing out. Position the keyring between the ends. Whip stitch across binding the ends together making sure to catch the keyring in between. 

Fasten off and weave in remaining tail.
