Textured Hand Towel

Does anyone else feel like certain items seem to go nasstayy at the same time? For me right now that is all of my hand towels. So I set out to find a new hand towel pattern and I am loving the texture in this new towel pattern.

I found this new stitch combo in the book Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary. She calls it plump post stitch and it has such gorgeous texture! It is essentially a double crochet two together but around a double crochet post from two rows below which gives it the gorgeous staggered bumpy stitches you see here. Combine this lovely stitch with We Crochet Dishie and that make a dreamy soft, absorbent textured hand towel to use all over your home or use as the perfect gift item! Dishie is by far my favorite cotton to work with as it is soft and drapey, but stays looking nice longer than other cotton yarns I have used. Not to mention it's affordable too! LOVE IT!

Let's Talk Materials

What you'll need:

5mm crochet hook

approximately 410 yards of Dishie or a similar worsted weight 100% cotton yarn.

I used the colors Ash and Swan. There is 190 yards in one skein of Dishie, so I recommend buying 3 skeins and then using the leftovers to make a matching dish cloth. I will be publishing that pattern soon!

Scissors

Tapestry needle or smaller crochet hook to weave in loose ends.

Gauge

Gauge isn't too critical in this project as you can adjust your stitch counts to customize your towel to your personal desires. My finished towel came out to measure 17 inches wide and 23 inches long.

4"x4" square of pattern repeat equals 12 stitches across by eight rows. Starting on a double crochet row and finishing on a single crochet row.

Stitch abbreviations

CH - chain
DC- double crochet
SC - single crochet
DP - double post (or plump post)
YO - yarn over
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
st - stitch
slst - slip stitch

Stitch explanation

DP or double post - YO insert hook around post of DC 2 rows below (the DC should be on top of your hook as you insert from the front and around the back of the DC like a front post double crochet stitch) , pull up a loop about 1" twice (total of 5 loops on hook), YO, draw through 4 loops on hook, YO draw through last 2 loops on hook.

* at the beginning of the pattern repeat it can be difficult to determine which DC stitch to DP around. I highly recommend counting out the stitches if you are unsure. In the first row the DP will be around the 4th DC (make sure not to count the turning chain) and then there will be 3 DC in between each DP with the DP occurring every 4 stitches.

* When making your double post stitch you will be skipping a stitch right behind the DP on the current row you are working in, make sure to continue on in the appropriate stitch to maintain the pattern repeat.

* Double post stitch is essentially a dc2tog around a double crochet stitch 2 rows below.

Pattern

Turning chains do NOT count as a stitch in this pattern.

To adjust the width of your towel chain a multiple of 4 + 1

CH 53

Row 1: DC in the 3rd CH from hook and in each CH across, CH 1, turn. (51 sts for each row)

Row 2: SC in each st across, CH 2, turn.

Row 3: DC 3, *DP around DC two rows below, DC in next 3 SC (making sure to skip the st behind the DP you just made),* repeat from * to * across row, CH 1, turn.

Row 4: SC in each st across, CH 2, turn.

Row 5: DC 1, DP around DC two rows below, *DC in the next 3 st, DP around DC two rows below, * repeat * to * across row, DC in the last st, CH 1, turn.

Row 6-41: Repeat rows 2-5

At this point I changed colors at the end of row 42 for a color block section. If you want to change colors in different positions throughout your towel, change at the end of a SC row in order to get the staggered look between colors with the double post stitches. If you want a towel all one solid color keep repeating rows 2-5 through row 61.

Row 42: SC in each st across until one st remains, insert hook in next st, YO and pull up a loop, YO with contrast color and pull through 2 loops on hook, CH 2, turn.

Row 43: repeat row 3

Row 44: repeat row 4

Row 45: repeat row 5

Rows 46 - 61: repeat rows 2-5

At this point you can choose to fasten off your work and weave in your ends or continue on to SC an edging around the entirety of your towel.

Change colors at the end of row 61

Single crochet edging: SC in each st across, SC 2 in the corners and SC 1 in each row along the sides of the towel, repeat around till you are back at the first SC of the edging, SC in the same st to create 2 SC in the beginning corner, slst to first SC, fasten off, weave in ends.

ALL DONE!

  1. There is nothing better than hand towels. but due to sweating these are less durable. So it is important to to use the most used fabric in clothing and textiles.
